HAPPY PEOPLE READ & DRINK COFFEE by Agnes Martin-Lugand ⁣

I bought this book years ago but it sat on my shelf for a long time. I picked it up one Sunday and finished it the same day. It’s a very quick read, but honestly… Not very good. It opens dramatically with Diane’s husband and only child dying in a car accident. Pitched as a story about overcoming loss, it was too one-note and didn’t give enough space to the story to feel authentic. ⁣

My biggest qualm was the male lead was abusive and there was no real character development. I think it was trying for enemies to lovers but there was no rooting for the couple because the man was awful and didn’t do anything significant to overcome his status as awful and physically aggressive toward Diane. It’s also not meant to be a love story, which is fine, but there wasn’t a lot of growth in Diane until the last few pages. It felt rushed and wasn’t what I expected from the title and the cover… I guess I expected something more Hallmark-y? Overall I was just confused and didn’t feel like it matched some of the praise featured on the back cover (unless I totally missed the point 🤷‍♀️). ⁣

Have you read this one? What’s the last book yo not meet your expectations in terms of plot/the way it was marketed? 💛✨
